If you’re in Tsukishima, Tokyo, you must try melon pan! This area is home to a famous melon pan shop that stays open late into the night.
Melon pan
Melon pan looks like a melon, but it doesn’t taste like one! It’s a type of sweet bread with a crunchy, cookie-like top and soft, fluffy inside.
A must-visit is Tsukishima Kyuei (pronounced “Kyuei”). This takeout-only shop is open until 10 PM and is located in the second alley of Monja Street. It’s a popular spot often featured on TV, and on weekends, people even line up to buy it, with over 1,000 pieces sold some days.

As you approach the store, you’ll hear a quirky Japanese song playing: “Melon pan doesn’t have melon inside…” It’s a fun, light-hearted tune that perfectly matches the vibe of the place.
The freshly baked melon pan is absolutely delicious! The outside is crispy and fragrant, while the inside is soft and airy. It’s light, so you can easily eat one in no time. I’m not usually a fan of sweet breads, but I can’t resist this one. While there are other melon pans out there, this one has a perfect balance of softness and flavor that sets it apart.
After enjoying some monjayaki in Tsukishima, make sure to stop by and grab one!
