Historical Background
In the 16th century, Japan was in the midst of the “Sengoku Period” (Age of Warring States), a century-long era of civil war. With the collapse of the central government’s authority, powerful feudal lords from across the country fought fiercely for territory and survival using both military might and strategic cunning. It was the most turbulent and dramatic period of upheaval in Japanese history.

About The Battles of Kawanakajima
The Battles of Kawanakajima were a series of battles fought in the Sengoku period of Japan between Takeda Shingen of Kai Province and Uesugi Kenshin of Echigo Province from 1553 to 1564. Shingen and Kenshin contested each other for control of the plain of Kawanakajima between the Sai River and Chikuma River in northern Shinano Province, located in the present-day city of Nagano. The battles were triggered after Shingen conquered Shinano, expelling Ogasawara Nagatoki and Murakami Yoshikiyo, who subsequently turned to Kenshin for help.

Story
The Battle of Kawanakajima is considered one of the most intense conflicts in samurai history. It was fought five times over 12 years for control of northern Shinano, present-day Nagano Prefecture. This performance focuses on the legendary duel between Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin, the highlight of the fourth battle.
The Uesugi army descended from the fog-covered Mt. Saijo to launch a surprise attack on the Takeda main camp. This performance recreates the “Sandachi Nanadachi” legend—where Kenshin himself charged in to strike Shingen—through powerful Sword Dance and choreographed combat. It depicts Shingen’s immovable stance as he deflects the onslaught with only his war fan, and Kenshin’s sharp sword strikes that surge like rough waves.
Through a single blade, we express the aesthetics of these two rivals who shared a deep mutual respect, and the profound nature of a battle that remains legendary because it ended without a final victor. You will feel the raw energy of the warring states period through the tension that pierces the silence and the intense performance where sparks fly.
Music
The performance features an original score composed by Hagi. Inspired by the historical fact of the army approaching the enemy camp under the cover of dense fog, the music blends high-tension elements reminiscent of Mission: Impossible. This bold arrangement creates a powerful soundscape where silence and intensity collide.
Character Introduction

Kenshin Uesugi

He led his army with overwhelming charisma and was a fearless commander who personally charged into the front lines of the enemy.

Shingen Takeda
