The Mentaiko, Mochi & Cheese monjayaki

Tucked away in a quiet alley just off the main street of Tsukishima’s famous Monja Street, you’ll find a cozy spot called Monkichi.

Located on the second floor, the restaurant had plenty of space when we visited, with only one other group of customers inside.

We ordered two of their signature dishes: the Monkichi Special Monjayaki (1,500 yen) and the Mentaiko, Mochi & Cheese Monjayaki (1,700 yen). Ordering was easy using the tablet at our table.

The Special Monja is packed with delicious ingredients like sakura shrimp, squid, pork, octopus, fresh shrimp, corn, soba noodles, and scallops. The staff grilled the monjayaki right in front of us to perfection, and it was both flavorful and satisfying.

The Mentaiko, Mochi & Cheese monjayaki is a classic combination that never fails to impress — truly a genius mix of flavors.

One unique thing about Monkichi’s monjayaki is that they tell you it’s ready to eat a bit earlier than usual. This keeps the cabbage crunchy and fresh, giving it a slightly different texture that reminded me a bit of okonomiyaki. It almost felt like a tasty snack rather than just a meal — a fun, fresh take on traditional monjayaki.
