Healthy Fermented Rice Koji Cafe in Tsukishima, Tokyo: No Sugar Added!

Choco Banana for a Healthy Gut

At “Genki Cafe” in Tsukishima, Tokyo, I want to introduce my favorite drink, the “Choco Banana for a Healthy Gut.” This refreshing drink helps with digestion and is made with sweet koji, banana, yam, milk, cocoa powder, walnuts, and cacao nibs—all without any added sugar!

I was a bit skeptical about the yam, thinking, “Does it really go well?” But it surprisingly works perfectly!

It’s delicious, and the yam adds a slightly thick texture, providing a satisfying feeling. The cafe’s unique feature is using rice koji to bring out a natural sweetness without any sugar. The sweetness is just right, and it’s also health-friendly.

Actually, during the New Year, I tried a sweet sake latte at another trendy cafe, but it was surprisingly not tasty. However, I can definitely recommend “Genki Cafe”!

What is Rice Koji?

Rice koji is a traditional Japanese fermented food made by growing mold (koji mold) on steamed rice. It’s commonly used in products like miso, soy sauce, and sake. Rice koji is known for its high nutritional benefits, helping digestion and improving gut health. It’s rich in enzymes and antioxidants, supporting overall health.

Additionally, rice koji is plant-based and doesn’t contain animal-derived ingredients, making it suitable for vegans and those following a plant-based diet. It’s also gaining popularity among people who focus on natural foods and gut health.

They’re not open on weekends, and there’s no English menu — and that’s exactly why we want to introduce this place to foreign travelers!
